At the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC New York), Jeffrey Epstein was initially placed in the general inmate population EFTA00172546. However, due to significant media attention and his notoriety among other inmates, he was moved to the Special Housing Unit (SHU) the following day, where inmates are securely separated from the general population and kept locked in their cells for approximately 23 hours per day EFTA00172546, EFTA01656708, EFTA00039025. This was done to ensure his own safety as well as the safety of staff and other inmates.
